Given the hit-driven nature of the industry, releasing an online game has always been considered a risky business endeavor, and the stakes keep getting higher with the rising costs of development. These are games that had a chance, but quickly lost their audience due to technical problems, lack of innovative content, and overall poor planning on the part of their studios.

The online elements were actually the most enjoyable aspect of The Division just didn't always work. The PC community quickly devolved into lawlessness as cheating and hacking became rampant. Things got so bad that more DLC couldn't bring lapsed players back.
Street Fighter is undoubtedly one of the most successful fighting game franchises of all time, but the series' first venture into the online multiplayer and esports arenas was anything but a success. Connectivity woes made it difficult to find opponents, and with no mechanism to punish players who rage quit, cowardly gamers were able to evade defeat by leaving matches. Given the sparse amount of single-player content, Street Fighter 5 saw 75 percent of initial players quit the game after playing only a dozen or so matches.
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga was one of the few LEGO games to offer online multiplayer when it was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It and LEGO Indiana Jones 2 remain the only two entries in the entire TT Games LEGO series to offer online co-op.
Steam players looking to play together do have one option to play together online with the service's built-in Remote Play Together functionality. This allows players joining in co-op to stream the game remotely and interacts with the game the same as if the players were playing couch co-op together. Hopefully, TT Games will add a true online co-op mode post-launch.
A simple solution to the screen real-estate issue would be some kind of online multiplayer where each co-op partner gets their own screen, but as previously reported, no option exists. Prior Lego games not having online options (aside from Lego Harry Potter, oddly enough) makes sense in a game focused on playing locally with children, but with a game like Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga vying for the nostalgia of 20/30-something millenials who grew up on the 2005 original, the lack of an online multiplayer option is disappointing to say the least.
